When applicants apply for the graphic design course at bcfe they are required to attend for interview with a portfolio of their work. This interview is important as it gives applicants the opportunity to discuss their work and interest in graphic design. The interview also allows us to see what level your work is at and if the course is a good fit for you. Because of the diverse nature of graphic design this course attracts a great cross section of applicants from different creative backgrounds. For example applicants varey from portfolio students, to professionals looking for a career change through to graduates and post graduates. So we are not just looking for one type of applicant, this course could be a perfect fit for you. Graphic Design Course entry Requirements:

To be eligible for a place on the graphic design course you will require a Leaving Certificate / LCVP with a minimum of two HC3s one of which must be in Art and three passes at ordinary level. However we also accept any QQI level 5 Certificate in Art with a merit profile. Though these academic entry requirements may also be waived for mature applicants (aged 21+).

Graphic Design Course Portfolio Guidelines

When you come for interview please bring a well presented portfolio of selected recent work. For example listed below are some suggestions of what that portfolio could contain:

  • Drawing – this should show strong use of line, tone and composition. Your work should be from life/observation and in a range of media showing a variety of subject matter.
  • Colour Work – work can range from painting, collage, printmaking, photography and textiles to mixed media.
  • Digital Work – this can be any type of computer-generated visuals such as Photoshop designs, digital layout, digital painting, illustration or motion graphics.
  • Work of Personal Interest – sketchbooks showing development and progression of ideas. Rough work demonstrating work practice and thought processes.

However these are only guidelines for a portfolio, you may have all the above in your portfolio or only elements.
